They primarily live along the Pitt River in the northeast corner of California, near the town of Burney.

Traditionally, much of their land away from the rivers was high mountain country, some forested with fir and pine but other parts covered with lava from eruptions of Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen volcanoes, where nothing grew.

Brief Profile

The Achumawi people are a Native American Nation and represent one among eleven other tribes in the Pitt River Tribe, the Ajumawi-Atsugewi Nation. The term Achumawi is an anglicization of the name of the Fall River band, ajúmmááwí, from ajúmmá "river". The language of the Achumawi was much like that of the Atsugewi, to the south of them. The two groups are sometimes linked together as the Palaihnihan branch of the Hokan language family.

Today, the Achumawi, Pitt River people are a severely endangered ethno-linguistic people group. Out of an estimated 900 remaining in northeastern California, only a few dozen elders speak the Achumawi language fluently. However, some Achumawi people are working to revive their language again.

Nevertheless, the people themselves maintain a social identity that adheres to their historical heritage. Their social identity is reinforced by the Pitt River Tribe Council.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for Achumawi Christians to grow in their faith and to share the message of Christ with other tribes associated with the Pit River Tribe (the Ajumawi-Atsugewi Nation).
  • Pray for Achumawi generation to avoid the cultural temptation to be "in name only" followers of Christ.
  • Pray that messengers of the Gospel will take the message of Christ to the few remaining Achumawi people.
