Brief Profile

The Klallam people are a Native American people of the United States consisting of three tribes residing on: (1) the Lower Elwha Tribal Community of the Lower Elwha Reservation located near Port Angeles, Washington near the mouth of the Elwha River; (2) the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe located in Blyn (Sequim), Washington; and (3) the Port Gamble Indian Community of the Port Gamble Reservation located in Kingston (Bremerton-Silverdale metro area), Washington.

In local media "Clallam" is used to refer to the people of Clallam County, Washington—both native and non-native. It is also used in the names of a number of non-native commercial enterprises. The spellings with 'K' are used to refer to the native peoples. The Lower Elwha tribe has adopted "Klallam" as its official spelling. The Port Gamble and Jamestown tribes have adopted "S'Klallam" as their official spelling.

Culturally, smoking salmon and preparing a clam bake is not much different than it was fifty, one hundred, or two hundred years ago.

Linguistically, they speak English. However, their language which was once spoken, then was forced to be forgotten, now has new life and new tongues. The Klallam teach their younger generations, even within their school systems, the Klallam language.

With the above in mind, the Klallam people continue to practice many cultural and linguistic traditions plus have added newer ones that make them distinctly the Klallam people group.

Some Klallam people adhere to traditional tribal beliefs. However, the majority are Shakers and Protestant Christians, with also some being Roman Catholic.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that messengers of the gospel will contextualize the gospel so that the Klallam will understand that they can be both Klallam and Christian at the same time.
  • Pray that evangelical Klallam will live their faith both in word and deed.
