Brief Profile

French Caribbean people are immigrants from seven territorial islands that are French-Creole speaking under French sovereignty in the Caribbean islands, including Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin, Saint Barthélemy, Les Saintes, Marie-Galante, and La Désirade. These islands constitute the three island nations of Guadeloupe, St. Lucia, and Martinique.

During the 1600s-1700s, the French were actively involved in colonizing the Caribbean. French settlers mixed with indigenous people and African slaves to create the distinctive French-Creole culture present today.

As a result, they are culturally a combination of French and Caribbean cultural influences in music, cuisine, style, architecture, etc. In addition, their primary language, Guadeloupean Creole French, is a mixture of French and indigenous language.

The majority of French Caribbeans claim Roman Catholicism as their religion. However, ther religious practices are very syncretistic in nature, being a mixture of Roman Catholicism and indigenous beliefs.
