Brief Profile

French Guiana immigrated to the United States from Guiana, an overseas department and region of France, on the north Atlantic coast of South America. Guiana borders Brazil to the east and south, and Suriname to the west in South America.

French Guianese are principally Creole (mixed descent). Guiana is also filled with minorities of ethnic blacks, American Indians, metropolitan French, Lebanese, Chinese, East Indians, Laotians, Haitians, Brazilians, and Vietnamese.

Their principal language is Guianese French Creole, although the official language of their people is French, and other languages are spoken by ethnic blacks and indigenous peoples.

Their own music and art style is very much a part of their social identity. Moreover, festivals and carnivals also reinforce their people group identity.

Their principal religion is Roman Catholicism, which is practiced by about 90 percent of the population.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for French Guiana immigrants to encounter not just economic abundance, but abundant life in Christ.
  • Pray for French Guiana believers to stay strong in their faith and be a vital witness to their community.
  • Pray for French Guiana evangelical churches to multiply and thrive, and to catch a vision for reaching out to people groups around them and around the world.
