Brief Profile

The Galibi Karibi, also known as Kalina, Carib, mainland Caribs and several other names, are an indigenous people native to the northern coastal areas and along rivers of South America. Their primary countries of origin include Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Brazil.

Their primary languages are Spanish and Galibi Carib, two unrelated languages. Galibi Carib is largely an oral language. Some also speak the Kalina language.

They are known for their indigenous musical instruments and especially percussion instruments. For instance, the sanpula (or sambula) is a large drum with two skins stretched over either end of the shell by hoops pulled together with cord and is played with a mallet.

They primarily practice Roman Catholicism. Their form of Roman Catholicism is mixed with many animistic practices and traditions.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for God to break down the barriers of traditional religion and open the eyes of the Galibi Karibi to the truth of the true Gospel.
  • Pray for God to raise up workers for the harvest among the Galibi Karibi in the United States and in their countries of origin.
  • Pray for the handful of Galibi Kalibi believers, that they would live pure lives and be a good witness to their people and other peoples.
