Brief Profile

The Isan people are a people group originating from Northeastern Thailand ("Isan") with an estimated population of over 22 million worldwide. Even though Northeastern Thailand is now fully incorporated into Thailand and all residents are Thai citizens, the Lao Isan language, unique diet, ritual and culture continues to thrive among this people group.

They speak Lao Isan, a language that belongs to the linguistic family of Tai peoples.

The Isaan overwhelming adhere to Theravada Buddhism, following the teachings of Buddha (the "enlightened one") and seek to eliminate suffering and improve their future by gaining merit in their present lives. At the same time, many practice their animistic ethnic religion. As such, they combine Buddhist teachings with folk religious practices, seeking help through the worship of spirits and venerated objects. Community is often found and centered around Thai Buddhist Temples.

Prayer Points

  • Pray Christians will utilize culturally appropriate materials, art, music, and church forms that provide opportunites to which the the Isan may respond.
  • Pray God will call people to serve among and intercede for the Isaan people.
  • Pray God will work in the hearts and minds of Isaan revealing to them the truth found in the message of Jesus Christ.
