Brief Profile

The Kansa, also spelled Kanza and the Kaw Nation, are a federally recognized Native American tribe in Oklahoma. Their name means "People of the South wind".

Their tribal language is Kansa, also known as Kaw, is classified as a Siouan language. The state of Kansas derives it name from the name of this tribe. The name of Topeka, capital city of Kansas, is said to be the Kaw word Tó Ppí Ké meaning "a good place to grow potatoes."

"The Kaw language, almost lost with the death of the last of the full-bloods, is being revived through lessons beginning with elementary school children and includes weekly conversational lessons for adults and children." (Kaw Nation)

Their tribal headquarters is located in Kaw City, Oklahoma [P.O. Box 50, Kaw City, OK 74641; Main Phone Number: (580) 269-2552]. Their total tribal enrollment 3,126 with 1,428 residing in the state of Oklahoma.

A number of Kansa are evangelical Christians. They belong to Baptists and other non-denominational churches. Younger generations often neglect their Christian heritage and live a more secular lifestyle.
