Brief Profile

Being one of the largest tribes in California, the Karok, or Karuk, are a federally recognized Native American tribe who reside in northwest corner of California, predominantly the counties of Humboldt and Siskiyou. The tribal headquarters is located in Happy Camp, California.

The Karuk language is highly endangered, with fewer than a dozen fluent elderly speakers. They live throughout a large area, from Yreka to Happy Camp to Orleans to Eureka. The number of fluent speakers steadily dwindled following contact with Europeans in the 1850s. But since 1980s, more adults have been learning Karuk as a second language. Today, language classes in Karuk are taught in some public schools, and in the community.

Happy Camp is the home to the Happy Camp Bible Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons), and All Saints Catholic Church. Karuk also adhere to indigenous beliefs and practices.

  • Pray that God will work in the lives of Karok people to understand and accept the truth of Jesus as the one and only way, truth, and life.
  • Pray evangelical Karok will boldly in word and deed share their faith in Christ.
