Brief Profile

The Kiowa are a Native American people group belonging to the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma which is headquartered in Carnegie, Oklahoma. Almost 70% of all Kiowa reside in southwestern Oklahoma with the rest spread throughout the United States.

The Kiowa are famous for their beadwork. They would bead all kinds of things.

In 1873, Quaker mission efforts began among the Kiowa, followed by Methodist, Baptist, and other denominations. The Native American Church also increased in importance as the Sun Dance and other hunting and war ceremonies declined. Protestant affiliation is now the norm; however, traditional practices continue and have experienced revival. As in earlier days, tribal ceremonies are concentrated in the summer, now centered on July 4. Religiously, some belong to the Native American Church, traditional tribal religion, Sun Dance, or evangelical Christianity.

Prayer Points

  • Pray Kiowa Christians will obey the Great Commission and take the Gospel to other unreached peoples.
  • Pray for spiritual renewal to take place among Kiowa.
  • Pray that Christians will provide training for Kiowa that emphasizes the Kiowa making disciple who in turn make disciples.
