Brief Profile

The Kyrgyz are a Turkic people who migrated from Kyrgyzstan, officially known as Kyrgyz Republic. Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the south west and China to the east. They constitute the largest people group in their home country.

They speak Kirhgiz which has a degree of mutual intelligibility with Kazakh.

Greatly influenced by a nomadic culture, the Kyrgyz people traditionally are also influenced with Russian culture in the north and Tajikistan culture in the south. They value showing respect to others. For instance, they show respect to elders and addressing older brothers and sisters with the proper name.

The majority of Kazakh are Islamic. Some are atheists, especially those from north Kyrgyzstan near the border of Russia.
