Brief Profile

The Miami, or Myaamia, which means "the Downstream People," are a Native American people. The Miami Tribe of Oklahoma is the only federally recognized tribe of Miami Indians in the United States. The Miami Nation of Indiana is an unrecognized tribe.

Historically, the majority lived in Indiana, Illinois, and southern Michigan at the time of European colonization of North America. ... They also reside in Ohio and became the most powerful American Indian tribe in Ohio until General Anthony Wayne defeated the Miamis and other American Indians in Ohio.

The headquarters of the Miami Tribe are based in Miami, Oklahoma. Of the 3,900 plus enrolled tribal members, 775 live in the state of Oklahoma. Enrollment in the tribe is based on documented lineal descent.

They adhere to Christianity or traditional tribal religion. Their traditional language is only spoken by very few.
