Brief Profile

The Mohegan-Montauk-Narragansett are a Native American people who formerly spoke an Algonquian language. They predominantly reside in New Connecticut. Sources vary but the total tribal population ranges between 1,400 and 1,700.

The name "Mohegan" probably originally referred to a particular tribal clan. Today, however, it is used as a broad rubric referring to several originally distinct Native American tribes: the Pequot, the Montauk (Metoac), the Narragansett, the Shinnecock, the Niantic, and the Nipmuc, among others. Hence, they are the Mohegan-Montauk-Narragansett people.

The Mohegan language has been dormant for approximately 100 years as the last native speaker, Fidelia Fielding, died in 1908. Fidelia, a descendant of Chief Uncas, is the preserver of the language, as she left four diaries that are used in restoring the language.

A large majority claim Christianity as their religion adherence yet very few being evangelical Christians, 3% of the total population.
