Brief Profile

The Panamint, also known as the Coso (Koso) or Timbisha ("Red Rock Face Paint"), are a federally recognized Native American people in south central California near the Nevada border who's language is of Aztecan descent and related to the Shoshone. They are recognized as the Death Valley Timbisha Shoshone Band of California.

The majority now speak English as only less than a dozen elders still speak the Panamint language. However, some among the younger generation are seeking to keep the language alive.

As is the case with many Native American peoples, religion centers around keeping harmony with nature. The ancestors of the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe came into the Death Valley area over a thousand ago. They gathered to listen to storytellers who told the history of the world. Different dances were held for healing and to influence the weather. All things were seen as part of a whole. Even today the Panamint have a very similar view of spirituality.

Prayer Points

  • Pray Christians will intentionally seek out Panamint to share the message of Christ.
  • Pray God will soften hearts and minds of Panamint to understand and receive the message of Christ.
