Brief Profile

The Piapoco (also known as Dzaze or Piapoko) are an indigenous people group who have immigrated from their homelands in Colombia and Venezuela.

In their home countries, they rely mainly on subsistence agriculture and fishing and hunting. They are also known for their skill in making balsa wood sculptures and baskets for sale in nearby trade towns.

Their primary language is Piapoco. Piapoco is an Arawakan language of South America. Piapoco is spoken by 7000 people in eastern Colombia and western Venezuela. It is a polysynthetic language with predominantly subject-verb-object word order.

Their primary religion is an ethnic religion which is deeply rooted in their ethnic identity. The tribe is very rooted in tradition and believes in the power of Shamans to perform miracles and heal the sick. Conversion to Christianity essentially equates to cultural assimilation.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for the Piapoco to find peace in Jesus Christ.
  • Pray that the gospel would spread rapidly among the Piapoco.
  • Pray for Piapoco believers to be bold in spreading their faith to their unreached people in their native lands, as well as to other people groups.
