Brief Profile

The Quechan, Kechan (usually known as Yuma) are a Native American people who live on the Fort Yuma Indian Reservation on the lower Colorado River in Arizona and California just north of the Mexican border.

Their language, Quechan, is a language of California, spoken by mostly a few hundred elders. Most Quechan speakers are elders, but some young people are working to keep their ancestral language alive.

According to Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, "Largely an agriculture community, the Tribe leases its 700 acre farm to a non-Indian farmer. It also operates a long-term sand and gravel lease with a non-Indian corporation which employs 8 to 10 tribal members. In addition to farming and the sand and gravel operation, the Fort Yuma Quechan Reservation counts on tourism and related business to augment its economy."
