Brief Profile

Quechua is the collective term for several indigenous people groups in South America who speak a variety of Quechua languages and who belong to several Quechua people groups in South America, especially in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Argentina.

Practically all Quechuas in the Andes have been nominally Roman Catholic since colonial times. Nevertheless, traditional religious forms persist and are blended with Christian elements. Quechua ethnic groups also hold to their traditional religious beliefs, particularly belief in Mother Earth, who they believe grants fertility and to whom burnt offerings and libations are regularly made. Also important are the mountain spirits as well as lesser local deities, who are still venerated, especially in southern Peru.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for the Quechua believers to boldly proclaim the gospel to their people.
  • Pray that the barriers of traditional Quechua religion would be broken down.
  • Pray for more workers for the harvest, both for the Quechua in the United States, as well as those in their various countries of origin.
