Brief Profile

The Serrano, refer to themselves as the Yuhaviatam, which means "people of the pines", are a Native American people in California where the majority enrolled in either the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, or the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians.

Very few Serrano are conversant in Serrano. The majority speak English. They are seeking to preserve their traditional culture and language. They have a language program and have developed educational materials.

Culturally, they celebrate an annual three-day pow-wow at California State University San Bernadino in October where they have competitions for dancing, drumming, and singing.

The majority of Serrano adhere to traditional ethnic religion with a small percentage claiming Christianity of the Moravian tradition.

Prayer Points

  • Pray unreached Serrano people will encounter evangelical Christians who will exhibit Christ both via words and deeds.
  • Pray God will send evangelical Serrano to plant churches among unreached Serrano and other unreached peoples.
  • Pray evangelical Serrano will grow strong in their understanding of the gospel and the Great Commission.
