Brief Profile

The Skagit, also known as Upper Skagit, are a federally recognized Native American tribe living in the state of Washington with the majority residing on the Upper Skagit Indian Reservation. They own and operate the Skagit Valley Casino Resort, along with the Bow Hill gas station located on Bow Hill.

They hold their traditional fishing spots as sacred and designated by the spirits. Their sacred fishing spots serve as verification and as a re-establishment of their traditions and culture.

Traditionally, they believed that a person would obtain at least one guardian spirit in their lifetime, normally by going on a quest, and a spirit would fall into two types, either lay spirits or shamanistic spirits. Lay spirits would help with everyday tasks, while shamanistic spirits were used only for curing or killing.

They adhere to a syncretistic form of Christianity - one that is mixed with traditional ethnic practices and certain elements of Christianity.

Prayer Points

  • Pray God will work in the hearts and minds of Skagit to understand that Jesus is the one and only true mediator for all peoples.
  • Pray Christians will intentionally encounter and share a message of Christ as the one and only Savior.
