Brief Profile

Surinamers (also known as Surinamese) began immigrating from their South American homeland to United States in significant numbers in the 1970's. While many Surinamers migrated as political refugees or in order to escape poverty, also there many who migrated for work, or who came as tourists or students and settled down. Like many other immigrant groups, they are attracted to cities (such as Miami and New York) that have significant existing populations of their people who can help them to get established. Surinamers are scattered throughout the United States, with a heavy concentration in Florida, which is home to the majority of the Surinamese ethnic associations

Surinamers living in the United States are from a wide variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds, but most are of Chinese, East Indian, Creole, and mixed descent. Their primary language is Sranan Tongo. The primary religion practiced by the Surinamer is Protestant Christianity.
