Brief Profile

The Assamese people predominantly emigrate from India, from the province of Assam near Delhi, and are known for their hard working nature and their simplicity. The caste system has never taken firm roots in their social stratification. As a result, a sense of togetherness binds them together.

Assamese celebrate many festivals, which unite all community separations of the society. These festivals are symbol of the Assamese culture. One of their most important festival is the Bihu. A non-religious festival, all communities - religious or ethnic - take part in the festival. Their culture is rich in folk music and brings a unique flavors in the food they eat.

A majority of the Assamese adhere to the Vaishnavas sect of Hinduism. The Vaishnavas do not believe in idol worship and perform Namkirtana where the glory of Lord Vishnu is recited. However, around one fourth of all Assamese are Muslims.
