Brief Profile

The Tanaina, self-named Dena'ina and also known as Knaiakhotana, are a Native American people who traditionally occupied the south central Alaska region. The Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage is named after them. A major exhibit is the Anchorage Museum.

They are found in the (1) Chickaloon Village Traditional Council, Chickaloon, Alaska; (2) the Kenaitze Indian Tribe in Kenai, Alaska; (3) the Native Village of Eklutna in Anchorage, Alaska; (4) the Native Village of Lime in Lime, Alaska; and (5) the Pedro Bay Village in Pedro Bay, Alaska.

Very few Tanaina speak their mother tongue and those who do are elderly. Most villages where they reside are seeking to preserve their culture and language via various means. See the Dena'ina Language home page. They speak English.

They were converted to Russian Orthodoxy and those that were not continued their traditional ethnic religion. Burial grounds of Dena'ina are either traditional Russian Orthodox house shaped or they are spirit houses.

Prayer Points

  • Pray Christians will intentionally engage the Tanaina people.
  • Pray God will breakdown strongholds in the lives of Tanaina people.
