Brief Profile

The Atsugewi people are a Native American Nation and represent one among eleven other tribes in the Pitt River Tribe, the Ajumawi-Atsugewi Nation. Another tribe in the Ajumawi-Atsugewi Nation is the Achumawi, Pitt River people. Some Atsugewi people are members of the Susanville Indian Rancheria.

Today, both the Achumawi, Pitt River and Atsugewi people are a severely endangered ethno-linguistic people group. Out of an estimated 150 remaining in northeastern California, very few, if any at all, speak the Atsugewi language fluently.

Nevertheless, the people themselves maintain a social identity that adheres to their historical heritage. Their social identity is reinforced by the Pitt River Tribe Council. Click here to read more about the Atsugewi.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for Atsugewi Christians to grow in their faith and to share the message of Christ with other tribes associated with the Pit River Tribe (the Ajumawi-Atsugewi Nation).
  • Pray that Atsugewi Christians will avoid the cultural temptation to be "in name only" followers of Christ.
  • Pray that messengers of the Gospel will take the message of Christ to the few remaining Atsugewi people.
