Brief Profile

Frisians are a Germanic people group who originated from the coastal parts of the Netherlands and Germany. Traditionally, they inhabited an area known as Frisia and are concentrated in the Dutch provinces of Friesland and Groningen and, in Germany, East Frisia and North Frisia. They predominantly speak West Frisian, which is spoken in the Dutch province of Friesland.

Culturally, they are similar to the Dutch people. However, they are distinguished from the Dutch in that they speak Frisian.

Christianity came early to Friesland with the dominion of the Franks in the eighth and ninth centuries, but it did not succeed in completely eradicating indigenous tradition.

The majority now are Protestant: with the largest percentage being Calvinist Dutch Reformed or Reformed churches, with a minority being Mennonites.

Prayer Points

  • Pray God will work in the lives of evangelical Frisian people to share the gospel with their people.
  • Pray that Christians will become friends with Frisian sharing their life in Christ both in word and deed.
