Brief Profile

The Mon people migrated from Myanmar. In Myanmar the Mon are called Talaing. They are one of the earliest peoples to reside in Southeast Asia residing in Myanmar along the southern border near Thailand. They are esponsible for the spread of Theravada Buddhism in Indochina and were a major source of influence on the culture of Myanmar.

The Mon people speak Mon, along with Burmese. As a result, one might easily classify Mon people as being Bhama people, the more majority people in Myanmar.

Due to political unrest, Mon have fled Myanmar for neighboring Thailand becoming refugees.

The Mon became Buddhists in the 5th century. Although the Mon are Theravada Buddhists, they are very superstitious and consult Monks who often act more like an astrologer advising on the supernatural. One can often find spirit houses in the homes.

Prayer Points

  • Pray God will break through the spiritual and mental strongholds that captivate Mon people.
  • Pray Christians will intentionally seek out and engage Mon people.
  • Pray near-culture evangelical Myanmar people will intentionally engage the Mon people with the gospel message.
