Brief Profile

The Heiltsuk people, also known as the Bella Bella, are First Nations people of the Central Coast region in British Columbia, centered on the island communities of Bella Bella and Klemtu. Heiltsuk culture has been and is known for its ceremonial, military, and artistic skills. The Heiltsuk were early participants in the revival of the ocean-going cedar canoes during the 1980s.

They speak Heilstuk, also known as Hailhzaqvla. The Heilstuk people assert that their language is "a living language that expresses (their) worldview and way of life. (Their) language connects (them) to the wisdom and knowledge of (their) ancestors and infuses (their) People with valuable insights and understanding." (Heilstuk Nation)

Christianity has a long history among the Heiltsuk. Early on Christianity retained pragmatic animistic practices. As a result, among some Heiltsuk, traditional religious beliefs and practices are still alive.
