Brief Profile

The Kitimaat are a one of two people groups included with the Haisla Nation.

The other people group is the Kitlope. Traditionally, the Kitlope, also spelled Gitlope, means "people of the rocks" or "people from the opening in the mountains" in the Tsimshian language and was the term used for them by the neighbouring Tsimshian people. They call themselves Henaksiala, while the Tsimshian meaning of the name for the Kitamaat group – whose name for themselves is Haisla – is "people of the snow". Unlike the Haisla who reside in nearby Kitamaat Village, the Kitimaat reside in the town of Kitimat.

Despite the two groups common names being Haisla in Tsimshian, the two people groups people are separate in that the Haisla speak English and the Kitimaat still speak the Haisla language. Moroever, they along with the neighbouring Heiltsuk peoples, were incorrectly known in the past as the "Northern Kwakiutl".

Prayer Points

  • Pray evangelical Kitimaat Christians will join in fulfilling the Great Commission of taking the gospel message to the nations that surround them.
  • Pray for Kitimaat Christians who are allowing secularism and materialism to influence their passion for knowing and serving Christ.
