Brief Profile

The Konkani people are an ethno-linguistic people from mainly the Konkan Coast of south western India. Specifically they originate from coastal cities of Karnataka and Goa.

Their mother tongue is the Konkani language. They broadcast Konkani TV Channel via Facebook. Moreover, theire is the first ever Konkani radio programme (Radio Mango) to hit the Canadian airwaves. Their associations (e.g. Ontario Konkani Association) reinforce social identity.

They value stories. "Konkani Folktales are the vehicles of value system of the community transmitted over generation to generations. There is an abundant wealth of life skills knowledge in it which are being transfered through oral narratives." (World Konkani Centre).

The majority of Konkani adhere to Hinduism with others being Roman Catholic. Roman Catholic Konkani are better known as Mangalorean Catholics, an ethno-religious community following the Latin Rite from the Mangalore Diocese.

Prayer Points

  • Pray God will intervene in the lives of Konkani people via dreams and other miraculous means to reveal the truth found in Jesus Christ.
  • Pray Christians will carefully examine who their neighbors are from India. More than likely, some are Konkani people.
  • Pray God will call out laborers to live among and minister to the Konkani people.
