The Northern Kurd, also known as Turkish Kurd, migrated from eastern and southeastern Turkey, home to the largest Kurdish population of any country in the world. Turkey is one of four areas where Kurds reside. The other three include northern Syria, northern Iraq, and northwestern Iran. Each region is home to similar Kurdish people groups but are divided across linguistic and geographic lines.

The Kurds as a whole are one of the largest non-state nations in the world. Their homeland, Kurdistan, has been forcibly divided and lies mostly within the present-day borders of Turkey, Iraq and Iran, with smaller parts in Syria, Armenia and Azerbaijan. A large Kurdish diaspora has emreged in the main cities of Turkey and Iran and more recently in Europe as well as North America. Kurdish immigration is largely the result of the Iran–Iraq War, the Gulf War and Syrian Civil War.

The majority of North Kurds are Sunni Muslims.
