Brief Profile

The Mayan constitute several people groups who share some degree of cultural and linguistic heritage in southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras.

They are known for their brightly colored, yarn-based, textiles that are woven into capes, shirts, blouses, huipiles and dresses.

Traditional Mayan religion was characterized by the worship of nature gods (especially the gods of sun, rain and corn). Most Mayan are nominal Roman Catholics, though, beginning in the late 20th century, many converted to Evangelical Protestantism. Their Christianity, however, is generally overlaid upon the native religion. Its cosmology is typically Mayan, and Christian figures are commonly identified with Mayan deities. Public religion is basically Christian, with masses and saint’s day celebrations. The native pre-Columbian religion is observed in domestic rites.

Prayer Points

  • Pray God will strengthen Mayan Christians into mature believers who have no need to fear or rely upon sacred objects to ward off evil.
  • Pray God will call Mayan Christians to share their faith with their own people and the least reached peoples near them.
