Brief Profile

The Naskapi (Nascapi, Naskapee, Nascapee) or Naskapi Innu are the Innu First Nation inhabitants of an area referred to by many Innu as Nitassinan, which comprises eastern Quebec and Labrador, Canada. The word Naskapi means "people beyond the horizon".

Naskapi is their principal language. It is spoken by all of them and written by many. English is their second language, although many younger persons also speak some French. The Naskapi still preserve many aspects of their traditional way of life and culture. Like many northern communities, the Naskapi rely on subsistence hunting, fishing, and trapping for a large part of their food supply and for many raw materials.

Beginning with Jesuits in the early 1600s, Christianity and indigenous religion walked side by side the Naskapi religious adherence. As a result, Christianity and indigenous religion are integrated into a hybrid system of syncretistic beliefs and practices.

Prayer Points

  • Pray Naskapi people will discover God's free grace as revealed through Jesus Christ sacrificial atonement for all people's sins.
  • Pray God will work in the hearts and minds of Naskapi people to understand that God's grace is a free gift and something that we must earn.
