Brief Profile

The Nass-Gitksian, also known as the Nisga’a, are a First Nations people of Canada who reside in the Nass River valley of northwestern British Columbia. Their name means "people of the Nass River".

They speak both the Nisga’a language and English. Their Nation is represented by four villages: (1) New Aiyansh, (2) Canyon City, (3) Greenville, and (4) Kincolith.

Some have moved to uban areas in Canada. For instance, around 4,500 live in the surrounding urban areas of Terrace, Prince Rupert/Prince Edward and Greater Vancouver.

Before missionaries brought Christianity to them in the 19th and 20th centuries, they practiced their own faith and belief system. These spiritual practices, including vision quests, have since been revived and are practiced by some today.
