Brief Profile

The Pentlatch are a First Nations people of British Columbia, closely related to Comox. Though there are still people of Pentlatch descent today, the Pentlatch language was last spoken in the 1940's, and few records of it remain.

Most Pentlatch people today are living together with the Kwakwakawakw in Qualicum First Nation. The name "Qualicum" comes from a Pentlatch language term that means "Where the dog salmon (chum salmon) run." The Qualicum First Nation reserve is located in Qualicum Bay at the mouth of the Big Qualicum River, near Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

The primary religion practiced by the Pentlatch is ethnic religion. Their ethnic religion originate from folktales and traditional stories. For instance, the transformer (also known as the Changer or Reformer) is a mythic figure common to many Northwestern tribes, who brought balance to the world by using his powers to change people, animals, and the landscape into the forms they have today.

Prayer Points

  • Pray God will open doors for Christians to share the gospel with unreached Pentlatch people.
  • Pray God will prepare the hearts and minds of Pentlatch people to understand and receive the message of Christ.
