Brief Profile

The Alabama people, also known as Alibamu or Albaamaha, are a Native American people group of the Southeastern tribes culture people. Originally, they resided in the state of Alabama near the Alabama River. Moreover, they were originally members of the Muscogee Creek Confederacy. Now, they reside on the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas in Polk County, Texas and the Alabama-Quassarte Tribal Town, headquartered in Wetumka, Oklahoma.

Their language is linguistically closely related to the Koasati. In fact, both the Alabama and Koasati, also known as the Coushatta, migrated to Texas during the same period having intermarried. As referenced above, their tribe is now known as the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas. As of 2010, there were 1,137 members of the Alabama-Coushatta tribe.

In Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, the Alabama reside in the Alabama-Quassarte Tribal Town and are affiliated with the federally recognized Muscogee Creek Nation. In Oklahoma, there are approximately 380 Alabama people.
