Miami is nicknamed the "Capital of Latin America.

Home to the largest Cuban population outside Cuba.

Miami is the second largest U.S. city with a Spanish-speaking majority, and the largest city with a Cuban-American plurality.

According to a 2009 UBS study of 73 world cities, Miami was ranked as the richest city in the United States, and the world's fifth-richest city in terms of purchasing power.

In 2008, Forbes magazine ranked Miami "America's Cleanest City", for its year-round good air quality, vast green spaces, clean drinking water, clean streets and city-wide recycling programs.

Profile

Although people from various parts of Latin America and the Caribbean have gone to Miami in recent decades, the Cubans have had, by far, the greatest impact, radically transforming the city politically, culturally, and economically. The west side of the metro area includes Flagami and Little Havana which is home to many traditional immigrant neighborhoods from Central America and Cuba. Cubans make up the majority of American peoples, followed by Haitian, Colombian, Jamaican, Nicaraguan, Mexican, and Venezuelan respectively.

Known as La Pequeña Havana ("Little Havana") to residents, this bright and colorful enclave is a loud, proud offshoot of Mama Cuba that has bloomed thanks to beneficial conditions in the land of freedom and opportunity. Little Havana has Miami’s highest population density due to the preponderance of apartments.

Overshadowed by Little Havana, Miami’s “La Petite Haiti” is roughly 40 percent smaller and lacks the family-friendly festive vibe of its hispanic neighbor. The area’s reputation had sunk so low, in fact, that it was used as a virtual locale for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Lately though, the enclave has begun a revival based on its proximity to the Miami Design District and the allure of the recently constructed Edgewater community. Many of the Haitian immigrants who built Little Haiti into the southeast’s center for Haitian and francophone culture have left but much traditional flavor remains.

Miami is also home to a number of indigenous peoples from Mexico and Guatemala who have fled their homelands due to economic hardship, violence and war. Among them are Mayans from Guatemala, including Kanjobal, Mam, and Popti, as well as Mixtepec Mixtec from the mountains of Southern Mexico.
