Richmond, VA

Richmond is a thirteen county metropolitan area located in central Virginia, with Richmond, the state capital, as its principle city.

The greater Richmond metro area is one of the fastest growing metro areas in the country, with massive recent increases in the population. One of the biggest reasons for this large increase of population is the steadily expanding suburban areas surrounding the city of Richmond. Many of these new people are immigrants looking for affordable costs of living which Richmond has compared to many east coast cities.

In the past, Richmond's ethnic makeup has primarily consisted of European immigrants from western and central Europe. However, more recently the area has seen an ethnic shift both in the city and the surrounding suburbs. Latino's are now the largest ethnic group in the greater Richmond area, and Asians, especially south and southeast Asians, are the fastest growing people group in the city.

There is a significant presence of immigrants from South American and Latin Caribbean countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Brazil, most of which have come within the last two decades. The southeast Asian population has also seen a recent spike with many Vietnamese and Filipino immigrants making their home in the suburbs surrounding the capital city. It is estimated that by as soon as 2025 foreign-born people will make up over ten percent of the total population.
