Brief Profile

The Creek, known as the Muskogee (Muscogee), are a Native American people of the Muskogee (Creek) Nation, headquartered in Holdenville, Oklahoma. Today the majority reside in in Oklahoma with other significant populations in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.

Their language, Creek belongs to the Muskogean language family and is related to the Choctaw language with some words being identical in pronunciation and the Chickasaw language.

Historically, they are known for mound-building of the Mississippian. During a 5,000 year period, mound-builders constructed various styles of earthen mounds for religious and ceremonial, burial, and elite residential purposes.

They continue to share a vibrant tribal identity through events such as annual festivals, stick ball games, and language classes. The Stomp Dance and Green Corn Ceremony are revered gatherings and rituals.
