Brief Profile

The Maori people emigrated from New Zealand where they constitute the second largest people. They are an indigenous New Zealand people resembling Polynesian people.

Although Maori is their native tongue, the majority are also conversant in English. Often when speaking to one another, they mix Maori and English. Their culture is rich with songs, art, and dance.

Their traditional dance, known as Haka, symbolizes an ancestral war cry or challenge. It is a posture dance performed by a group, with vigorous movements and stamping of the feet with rhythmically shouted accompaniment.

Historically, they believed in gods which represented the sky, earth, forests, and forces of nature. They also believed that the spirits of their ancestors could be called upon to help them in times of need or war.

However, a large percentage of present day Maori are either Mormons or Protestant Christians.
