Brief Profile

The Chamorro people are an indigenous peoples from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in Micronesia and Guam. Significant Chamorro populations reside in Hawaii, California, Washington, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, and Nevada. The majority reside in Hawaii and the West Pacific coast of the United States.

American, Japanese, German, and Spanish cultures have all influenced modern day Chamorros. Traditionally, they value family with the family, community, and the elderly. As a result, large extended families remain central to life of the Chamorro.

Due to American influence, the Chamorro language is endangered language. Many are now speaking English as their first and preferred language.

Many Chamorro claim Roman Catholicism as their religious adherence. However, some practice a mixture of Roman Catholicism along with indigenous beliefs and traditions. Others do not claim any religious affiliation and live a secular lifestyle.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for God to raise up workers both for and from the harvest among the Chamorro people.
  • Pray that God would give evangelical Chamorro believers a heart to reach out to unreached peoples residing both near and beyonf them.
