Brief Profile

Macedonians, also known as Macedonian Slavs or Slavic Macedonians, are foreign born (1st generation) people who originated from the mountainous region of Macedonia which borders Bulgaria, Greece, Albania, and Kosovo and Serbia.

They speak the Macedonian language, a South Slavic language. Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, Greek, Ottoman and Serbian cultures all play a part in the rich heritage of literature, arts, music, cuisine, and architecture in the land, forming a modern yet traditional culture. Many reside in suburbs, and are employed in the professional, clerical, and service sector of the economy.

The majority of Macedonians follow Eastern Orthodox Christianity, with minorities following Roman Catholicism and Islam. Very few evangelicals are Macedonians. The culture of Macedonia is intricately linked to the Eastern Orthodox Church, founded by the Byzantine missionaries Saints Cyril and Methodius, as well as the numerous empires which occupied the land over two millennia.

Prayer Points

  • Pray God will remove social and religious barriers that prevent Macedonians from understanding God's grace is not earned but freely given to all who receive it.
  • Pray God will send Christians to share the message of God's grace.
