Brief Profile

The Gujarati are a relatively peaceful people, except for religious tensions that exist between the Hindus and Muslims. Known for their resourcefulness and their good business sense, they have successfully emigrated and prospered in many countries around the world.

The Gujarati speak an Indo-Aryan language, which is also called Gujarati. It has many different dialects, some based on region and others based on caste or community.

Most of the Gujarati (88%) are Hindus. The Muslim Gujarati make up (6.6%) of the population.

The Gujarati often have established a successful business presence owning numerous commercial properties and stores. Generations of Gujarati have deep roots and often give the impression that they have assimilated themselves into the Western culture. However, this is often not the case as the majority maintain a distinct Gujarati identity.
