Brief Profile

WHO ARE THEY?

Serbians of North America have emigrated from the nation of Serbia to Canada and the United States. There are around 90,000 Serbians in Canada. City-specific population numbers for Serbians in Canada have not been found, however, evidence suggests pockets in Winnipeg, Toronto, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Calgary. In the United States, there are over 13,000 Serbian-speakers in the city of Chicago.

WHAT IS THEIR HERITAGE?

The kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes came into existence in 1918, and its name was changed to Yugoslavia in 1929. Post World War II Yugoslavia was governed by the communists, and Serbia became a Federal unit of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The 1990s saw the break-up of Yugoslavia, and a time of war, political turmoil, and conflict followed for the people of Serbia. In 2006, the people of Montenegro ended their union with Serbia, and Serbia once again became a separate nation.

WHAT ARE THEIR BELIEFS?

Based on the 2002 census, there were over six million residents who claimed Serbian ancestry, and they are overwhelmingly linked to the Serbian Orthodox Church. This national identity with the Serbian Orthodox Church has been in place at least since the early 19th century. Over 85% of Serbians claim to be Orthodox Christian, while nearly 6% claim to be Catholic.

WHAT ARE THEIR NEEDS?

Serbians need to be heard on the issues that have shaped their nation in recent years. There are strong feelings especially toward NATO nations who participated in the military intervention into the conflict between Serbia and Kosovo in the late 1990s. Many Serbian’s view this action as intrusive and illegal. In economic and other ways, the nation is still recovering from the toll this conflict has taken on its infrastructure and economy.

WHAT IS KEEPING THE GOSPEL FROM THEM?

·A lack of a gospel witness among them.

·Their national identity with the Orthodox Christian Church.

    ·Cultural and language barriers.

HOW CAN WE PRAY?

·Pray for leaders to emerge who will take the gospel to them.

·Pray for healing of emotional wounds brought on by the turmoil in their homeland.

WHAT CAN MY CHURCH DO?

·Organize a prayer strategy for unreached Serbs in North America.

·Research to discover populations of Serbians nearby.

·Reach out with acts of kindness and build relationships with Serbians.
